 2023 Preview

Valley Head completed the 2022 season with a 10-2 record. Last year Valley Head captured the region seven title and a number one seed in the Class 1A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Valley Head reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Marion County by a score of 27-6.

The Tigers won as many games as in any season since 1984. The 493 points scored by the Tigers last year were a team record in a single season. The Tigers hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Hammon saw improvement as they won ten games following a 5-6 record in 2021.

The high-scoring Valley Head offense ranked 25th in the AHSAA. They averaged 41.1 points a game.

Since 2010, Valley Head has gone a combined 62-70. Their 47.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Valley Head has managed to compile a record of 116-143. Their 45.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 1A and 240th in the AHSAA.

The Tigers are led by head coach Charles Hammon who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 33-32 over the past six seasons at Valley Head. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won one region crown with Coach Hammon.

The Tigers lost a lot of talented players from the 2022 team and Coach Hammon will need to find a few replacement players to remain competitive.

Valley Head enters the 2023 season with a string of 6 consecutive wins on their home field at Tiger Stadium.

The Tigers have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region seven this season.

The defense will be led by Braden Busby this season after collecting 88 total tackles last season.

The Tigers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent North Sand Mountain on Friday, August 25 at Tiger Stadium. Last year the North Sand Mountain Bison finished with an overall record of 4-7 and in fourth place in Class 2A region seven. The Bison lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Lexington by a score of 49-14.

Valley Head and North Sand Mountain have met a total of 19 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 11-8-0 record against the Bison. They last met in 2022 with Valley Head winning by a score of 45-33.

Valley Head lost 1A All-State  running back Hunter Robinson to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Also graduating was teammate athlete Eian Bain.
